IVF: the battle against infertility

Table of Contents

In this day and age where technology gets better by the minute, infertility treatments like IVF and IUI makes having a baby easier for couples who are struggling to conceive. Every year more than 500,000 people undergo this treatment making their dream of having their own family true.

Several factors such as age, underlying issues on both parties may lead to this problem. Women who are diagnosed with endometriosis, problems with ovulation, problems with the uterus or fallopian tube are more prone to this problem while the problems in men could be low sperm count or inability of sperm to penetrate or survive in the cervical mucus.

What is IVF?

In vitro fertilization (IVF) is a type of assisted reproductive technology (ART) used to help people with fertility problems have a baby.
During IVF, eggs are removed from a woman’s ovaries and fertilized with sperm in a laboratory. The fertilized egg, called an embryo, is then transferred to the uterus, where it can implant and develop into a pregnancy.

To qualify for IVF treatment, individuals must meet certain criteria. Women using their own eggs should generally be under 45, while those using donor eggs can be up to 50. Both partners must avoid substance abuse, and overweight or obese individuals are encouraged to lose weight before treatment. Additionally, individuals with severe psychiatric disorders or unstable relationships may need to address these issues prior to undergoing IVF.
